One of the questions I am asked from time to time is whether parents should come to their senior's photo session. My answer is always the same.
Absolutely.
Over the years, I have found that senior sessions are just as much about the parents as they are about the senior. This is a milestone for the entire family, and I love having parents there to experience it instead of simply waiting to see the finished gallery a few weeks later.
From a practical standpoint, having parents at the session makes everything easier. They can help with outfit changes, hold jackets or extra shoes, fix a crooked necklace, smooth a collar, or catch the little details that are easy to miss. Those small things help the session move smoothly and keep the focus on creating great images.
But my favorite reason has nothing to do with logistics.
Parents know their children better than anyone. They know exactly what will make them laugh, how to get a genuine smile, and when to simply step back and let them have their moment. Some of my favorite expressions happen after a comment from Mom or one of Dad's jokes that only the family understands.
I also love watching parents see their son or daughter through a different lens. During a senior session, they have the opportunity to slow down for an hour, watch their child with a sense of pride, and realize just how much they have grown. It is one of those moments that often gets overlooked in the busyness of senior year.
Senior pictures are more than yearbook photos. They are a way to celebrate this season before everything begins to change. Having parents there simply makes the experience even more meaningful.
