Why Extended Family Photos Are Worth Making Time For

The older I get, the more I realize how rare it is to have everyone in the same place at the same time. Aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins — the people who shaped our stories and fill our memories. That is what makes extended family sessions so special.

Most of us have hundreds of photos on our phones of our own kids, but how many do you have with your parents? Or with your siblings and their families? Those moments don’t happen as often as they used to, and when they do, they deserve to be documented.

When you book an extended family session, my job is to make it easy — not chaotic. I’ll walk everyone through where to stand, how to interact, and make sure every grouping gets the attention it deserves. We’ll capture the big all-together photo, the smaller family groupings, and those little side moments that happen when cousins start giggling or grandparents reach for a hand.

These Photos Become Family History

Long after the toys, cars, and vacations fade from memory, these portraits remain. Your grandkids will look back and see where they came from. Your parents will proudly display these images in their home. And years from now, you’ll be so glad you took the time to make it happen.

I’ve photographed extended families across Birmingham for years, and every time I deliver a gallery, I hear the same thing: “I’m so glad we finally did this.”

You don’t have to wait for the perfect time or weather — you just need to gather your people.

Let’s Make It Happen

If your family is planning to be together soon, it’s the perfect time to schedule your session. Whether you have three generations or more, I’ll help you create a relaxed and meaningful experience that results in timeless, natural portraits your whole family will treasure.
