Helping Senior Boys Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera
Helping Senior Boys Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera
Let’s be honest—most senior boys aren’t counting down the days until their photo session.
They’re not texting their friends about what to wear or dreaming up poses.
But that doesn’t mean the session can’t be meaningful.
And it definitely doesn’t mean it can’t be good.
I’ve photographed a lot of senior boys over the years, and one thing I’ve learned is this: if you want them to relax, give them something familiar to hold on to.
Something that feels like them.
For some it’s a truck. For others it’s a baseball glove, a guitar, a basketball, or even just a favorite spot they’ve spent time in.
Whatever it is—they light up a little when it’s included.
Their posture shifts. Their guard comes down. They’re not “posing.” They’re just being themselves.
And that’s when the real photos happen.
Bring What They Love
If your son has something he’s proud of, something he’s worked for or spent time with or just really cares about—it belongs in the photos.
Not because we’re trying to be clever. But because it matters.
When we include something personal, the session doesn’t feel like something being done to them. It becomes something they’re part of.
And that shift makes all the difference.
It helps them feel in control. It gives them something to focus on. And more than anything, it lets their personality come through—naturally, without being forced.
Make It Easy
You don’t need three perfectly coordinated outfits or a Pinterest board full of ideas. You just need to show up with a few things that feel like home.
I’ll take care of the rest.
As a Birmingham senior photographer, my sessions are laid-back, natural, and focused on making each senior feel confident. That doesn’t mean they have to love the camera. It just means they leave feeling proud of the way they showed up in it.
These photos are for them just as much as they’re for you.
Let’s make sure they feel like themselves in every single one.
