There is something incredibly special about getting to watch families grow through the years. One of the greatest joys of being a family photographer in Birmingham, AL is reconnecting with families and documenting each new season of life. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a sweet family of three during a beautiful sunset session at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and it was a session I had been looking forward to for quite some time.
This wasn't our first time together. In fact, the first time I met this family, their little girl was celebrating her first birthday. It feels like just yesterday we were documenting those early milestones—the curious expressions, the tiny steps toward independence, and all the excitement that comes with turning one. Fast forward a year, and here we were again, celebrating her second birthday and another chapter in their family's story.
As a family photographer near me, I often hear parents say that time moves quickly, but seeing it firsthand through my lens is always a powerful reminder. One year can bring so many changes. Babies become toddlers. Tiny hands become a little more confident. Personalities shine brighter. The moments that once felt ordinary suddenly become cherished memories.
The Birmingham Botanical Gardens provided the perfect backdrop for this family's session. As the sun began to set, warm golden light filtered through the gardens, creating a soft and timeless atmosphere. One of the reasons I love photographing families here is the variety of natural beauty throughout the grounds. Whether we're walking through blooming gardens, exploring winding pathways, or simply enjoying the evening light, every corner offers something unique.
What made this session especially meaningful was seeing how much their daughter had grown since her first birthday session. At two years old, she was full of curiosity, energy, and wonder. She wanted to explore everything around her, and her parents embraced every moment with patience and joy. Rather than focusing on perfect poses, we spent our time capturing genuine interactions—the laughter, the cuddles, the hand-holding, and those fleeting expressions that parents never want to forget.
These are often my favorite moments during family photography sessions. The images that families treasure most years from now are rarely the perfectly posed ones.
