Why Extended Family Photos Matter More As Families Grow

As an extended family photographer in Birmingham AL, one of my favorite things to witness is the way family dynamics shift and grow over time.

Children become adults. Adult children become parents themselves. Grandparents suddenly find themselves surrounded by entirely new little personalities running through the family.

This session was such a beautiful example of that season of life. We met in a large open field just before sunset with a family that included three grown children, their parents, and two year old triplets who completely stole the show from the very beginning.

Like most toddlers, the triplets were far more interested in exploring than standing still, and honestly, that is exactly what made the session feel so alive. There was laughter, movement, snacks, chasing, and the kind of joyful chaos that naturally happens when you put toddlers in a wide open field at golden hour.

Those are often the moments families end up loving most later.

One of the things I love about extended family photography is that every generation brings something different to the session. The grandparents were relaxed and soaking everything in. The adult children stepped naturally into helping, playing, and keeping everyone laughing. The triplets ran freely through the grass while everyone else adjusted around them.

The whole session felt less like a formal portrait and more like a memory unfolding in real time.

That is always my goal.

Of course we captured the classic portraits everyone wants, but some of my favorite images from the evening were the in-between moments. The grandparents laughing while trying to keep up with three toddlers at once. Parents reaching down for tiny hands. Siblings smiling at each other across the field while the sun dropped lower behind them.

Those are the photographs that grow more meaningful with time.

Extended family sessions are not really about perfection. They are about preserving connection during seasons that pass quickly. Especially when young children are involved, the goal is not to control every moment. The goal is to remember what this stage of life actually felt like.

Busy. Full. Loud. Beautiful.

The older I get, the more I believe these gatherings matter deeply. Getting everyone together in one place becomes harder as families grow and schedules change. Taking the time to document it is something very few families ever regret.
