What Happens If It Rains on the Day of Our Family Photos?

One of the questions I am asked most often before a family photo session is, "What happens if it rains?"

The good news is that a rainy forecast doesn't automatically mean your session is canceled. Depending on the weather, we have a few different options.

1. Reschedule

If the forecast calls for heavy rain, thunderstorms, or unsafe weather, we'll simply choose another date.

Your family's safety is always the priority, and I never want anyone worrying about the weather instead of enjoying the experience. Fortunately, Alabama weather changes quickly, so we usually have no trouble finding another beautiful evening.

2. Move to a Covered Location

If we're expecting light rain or passing showers, we may be able to move your session to one of my favorite covered locations.

It offers beautiful light while keeping everyone dry, and many families are surprised by how gorgeous these sessions turn out. Some of my favorite images have been taken on cloudy, drizzly evenings because the light is soft, even, and incredibly flattering.

3. Lean Into the Rain

Sometimes families decide to embrace the weather.

A couple of umbrellas, rain boots, and a willingness to laugh can create photographs unlike anything you originally imagined. Children usually think playing in the rain is an adventure, and those genuine smiles often become some of the most memorable images from the entire session.

Every family is different, and there is no one right answer.

My job is to help you decide which option makes the most sense based on the forecast, your family, and the type of session you envision.

No matter which direction we choose, the goal stays the same: creating beautiful photographs that capture your family and this season of life.
